Oily Skin Isn’t the Problem: Your Cleanser Is

If your face gets oily fast, you’re probably doing what most men do: washing too aggressively. It feels clean for an hour. Then it gets worse.

The strip/rebound cycle

When you strip your skin, it panics. So it produces more oil to protect itself. Greasy, wash harder, strip more, get greasier. The problem isn’t that your skin makes oil. The problem is that you keep triggering it.

Signs you’re stripping your skin

If you recognise these, your routine is working against you.

◉ Skin feels tight right after washing
◉ You’re shiny again within 1 to 2 hours
◉ You use very hot water
◉ You use a “strong” cleanser morning and night
◉ You scrub like you’re sanding wood
◉ Your skin looks oily but also feels dry in patches

The fix (cleanse better, not harder)

You don’t need a harsher cleanser. You need a better one and better technique. Use lukewarm water. Cleanse for 20 to 30 seconds. Rinse well. Pat dry. Then moisturise, yes, even if you’re oily. Moisturiser helps reduce the panic response that drives rebound oil and keeps your barrier stable so your skin doesn’t overcompensate. Recommended: Power Cleanse.

How often should you cleanse?

This depends on how your skin feels, not what you think you “should” do.

◉ If you’re sweaty or oily and your cleanser is gentle: morning and night
◉ If your skin feels tight, irritated, or reactive: night only, rinse with water in the morning

The 7‑day oil reset

For one week, keep it boring and consistent.

◉ Cleanse gently
◉ Moisturise every time
◉ Stop scrubbing and over-exfoliating
◉ Avoid very hot water

Most men notice less shine, calmer skin, and fewer breakouts. Not because they fought oil harder. Because they stopped triggering it.
